Debina

Debina, likely derived from the Italian “de vino,” meaning “grape of wine,” is a purely Greek white wine grape variety celebrated for its delicate and crisp character.

Originating from the picturesque region of Zitsa in Ioannina, Debina thrives on the hills and slopes of the six villages within the renowned Zitsa Wine Region. Cherished for its unique fruity, aristocratic, and elegant aromas of apple, pear, and peach, Debina captivates even the most discerning wine enthusiasts.

Centuries ago, Debina was the primary indigenous variety used by local vintners to produce the famous sparkling and semi-sparkling wines of Zitsa, earning it the title of the ideal variety for sparkling wine production. It is also well-suited for creating refined, youthful, dry white wines. This versatility has led to its recognition as a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) variety under Greek law, specifically for wines bearing the ZITSA designation. Leveraging ideal soil, climate, and variety, combined with modern oenological knowledge and local tradition, the Glinavos Estate produces various types of wines from this distinctive grape variety, along with the exceptional Epirus tsipouro.

The mountainous terrain of Pindus and the airflow patterns created by the Kalamas River as it flows towards the Ionian Sea provide Zitsa with the unique microclimate necessary for cultivating Debina. Mild winters and cool summers offer perfect conditions for vine growth and the production of high-quality varieties. The gentle hills and slopes of the Zitsa wine region sit at an altitude of 600-700 meters, an ideal range for producing quality wines. The limestone-rich, shallow soils at this elevation, influenced by sea breezes, create a perfect environment for Debina.

Depending on the vineyard, Debina begins to ripen around September 15 and continues until the end of the month. The harvest timing depends on the year’s climatic conditions. A low yield per acre is essential for high-quality Debina, not exceeding 800-900 kg per acre. When the grape’s sweetness reaches 11-12 Baumé and the berries become glossy and clear, they are ready for harvest.

The subtle quality differences among vineyards become evident during winemaking. Debina is known for its mild and delicate aromas and flavors. Its harmonious and balanced taste contributes to its authenticity and uniqueness. Green apple, citrus fruits, and pear dominate its profile, while high-quality Debina also features tones of white-fleshed peach and jasmine. The variety’s good natural acidity enhances its characteristic freshness, making Debina wines distinctively impressive.

Debina, with its rich history and distinctive qualities, continues to be a cornerstone of Zitsa’s viticultural heritage, offering wine enthusiasts a taste of Greece’s winemaking excellence.
