Mouhtaro

Mouchtaro is a very rare indigenous dark-skinned grape variety of Central Greece. Until recently it could only be found in Askri Valley, where the old bush vines produce low yields of concetrated grapes.

Mouchtaro existed historically in the wider area of Thebes but as it was not a productive Variety the producers did not want it. At the same time most drank mostly white wines

The high demand for white instead of red wines and the low yields that the variety tends to produce in the arid slopes under the mountains, are responsible for its near extinction, as growers favoured other local varieties. As a grape that can withstand the heat, more and more producers of Central Greece turn lately to Mouchtaro.

Usually the wines of Mouchtaro are monovarietals and in reds the variety shows good affiliation with careful use of oak. In some cases it can be blended with international varieties. Tannins tend to be soft, and colour in grapes is rich, specially from old bush vines. It can boast a wide range of different styles of wines.

In PGI Thiva, rose wines have aromas of fresh berries and hints of spices, while being lively and with a long finish. Red wines have aromas of black fruits, with spicy and earthy notes. On the palate they are rich, yet pleasant.

100% Mouhtaro. A very distinctive red wine that is so different and interesting. Red stone cherries, red berries, a touch of liquorice and herbs, beautiful crunchy fruit, green tea, and a slight ferrous taste, with great acidity, medium body, perceptible tannins and a slightly bitter, herbal aftertaste.
