Vlachiko

Vlahiko is a rare and emerging red grape variety cultivated in the mountainous vineyards of Epirus, Greece.

Found predominantly in the semi-mountainous vineyards of Zitsa and Metsovo, Vlachiko thrives in some of the highest and most rugged terrains in Europe. Originating from the cold regions of Northern Greece, particularly Epirus, Vlachiko captures the essence of its chilly climate, resulting in wines that showcase the distinctive characteristics of their origin.

Vlachiko wines are characterized by a bright, ruby-red color that remains light rather than deep. On the nose and palate, they reveal intense and clear aromas of fresh forest fruits, spices, and green leaves. The wines typically have a medium-low alcohol content, rarely exceeding 12.5%, with subtle, fine tannins and high acidity. The cool climate, with significant altitude and limited sunlight, enhances these attributes, imparting a refreshing and vibrant quality to the wine.

Traditionally blended with other local varieties such as Bekari, which adds deeper color and higher alcohol content, Vlachiko is increasingly being appreciated on its own. Modern producers are beginning to highlight its unique qualities, crafting exceptional wines that stand out for their elegance and freshness. Vlachiko wines are ideal for those who prefer lighter, more nuanced reds over heavy, full-bodied options.

Aromatically, Vlachiko features fruity and spicy notes, including cherry, blackberry, plum, sweet spices, and pepper. The wine’s refined body, soft tannins, and moderate alcohol content are complemented by a pronounced acidity, a hallmark of its high-altitude origins. The vibrant ruby color is always striking but never too deep, contributing to the wine’s overall sense of freshness.

Vlachiko is usually vinified using classic red winemaking techniques, often with pre-fermentation maceration to enhance color intensity. Aging in barrels is common, adding complexity, structure, and mouthfeel to the wine. Despite its light structure, Vlahiko can age well, improving over four to seven years, though it is also delightful to drink shortly after bottling. In summary, Vlachiko offers a unique and refreshing alternative in the realm of red wines, embodying the rich heritage and innovative spirit of Greek winemaking.
