On Sunday 28 March 2021, at 7 pm, nineteen women joined the first Wine Ladies online tasting. Connecting Athens, Thessaloniki and Brussels, the gathering brought a shared wine experience into homes during lockdown.
Assyrtiko was the theme: one Greek grape variety explored through different places and winemaking approaches, with Nikitas Prassas guiding the conversation.
Assyrtiko from north to south
The wines were offered by Wine Art Estate – Κτήμα Τέχνη Οίνου, Zacharias Winery and Santo Wines. Each brought a different expression of the variety to the table and an opportunity to talk about its place of origin.
Rather than looking for a single correct impression, participants compared aromas, flavours and preferences. The shared selection gave everyone a common starting point, while leaving room for individual discoveries.
Preparation before the screens switched on
Cinque prepared, packaged and arranged delivery of the tasting kits. Small-format wine samples allowed participants in different locations to follow the same sequence without needing full bottles of every wine.
The practical work mattered: the wines had to reach the participants, be ready for chilling and be opened together. This was a particular event organised under the conditions of that period.
Two hours around a shared table
For approximately two hours, the group tasted, took notes, enjoyed small bites and exchanged questions. Nikitas kept the tasting focused while making space for humour and conversation.
The online format could not reproduce every part of meeting at the bar, but it offered a way to stay in touch through Greek wine when meeting in person was difficult.
An evening worth remembering
By the end of the gathering, a second Assyrtiko tasting with barrel-aged expressions was already being discussed. That was an idea shared at the time, rather than a current event announcement.
